An overview of discrimination

According to a recent report from the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC), there are 58 federal laws which give spousal entitlements to heterosexual de facto couples but fail to recognise same-sex couples. This discrimination occurs in superannuation, taxation, pensions, workplace entitlements, Medicare, immigration and a wide range of other areas which affect us all on a daily basis.

The HREOC report shows how this discrimination causes financial hardship, social stigma and emotional trauma for tens of thousands of gay and lesbian Australians. We at PFLAG also know how deeply it can affect the many heterosexual Australians who are the parents, children, family members and friends of same-sex partners.

What hurts them hurts us.
